Society trip to Rathcroghan... and beyond !!

Hey Everyone,

Just posting to remind you all of our upcoming trip to Rathcroghan on Saturday the 9th of November

Rathcroghan is one of the most well-known Celtic Royal sites in Ireland and tradition considers it to be the inauguration site of the Kings of Connacht. On our tour we will visit Ráth Cruachan mound, a massive Celtic ceremonial site; Owenagat, a cave once thought to be an entrance to another world and other sites in this huge archeological complex.

Professor Muiris O'Sullivan has kindly volunteered to accompany us on this trip and will give us a tour of some select sites on the way back to Dublin. Possible sites include Clonnard, a medieval monastic foundation with a Norman motte located nearby and Ardagh, the site of an early ecclesiastical foundation. Depending on time we may change plans with regards to visiting these sites

You can read more about Rathcroghan, in the words of John Waddell, here !

The Bus will leave from UCD main bus stop at 9am and will be returning at 6pm. This trip will cost 4€ and that includes all expenses except lunch. Feel free to bring a packed lunch or money to spend at a restaurant in town. Also waterproof clothing is advised as well as a torch to explore the cave (It is not necessary for everyone to bring one).

Almost half the seats in the 24-seater bus have been booked already so email me at emmet.o-fionnalaigh@ucdconnect.ie in order to be guaranteed a place on this trip.

See you there,

Emmet Ó Fionnalaigh,
Trip Officer
